Authenticity-What Does It Mean?

Lately, I have been captivated by the concept of authenticity—what it means to be an authentic leader, friend, and human being.

This fascination began during a class I teach at Virginia Tech's Center for Leadership in Global Sustainability, where I serve as a Professor of Practice. During a discussion on authentic leadership, I asked my students to define authenticity. To my surprise, I received 20 different definitions—from 20 students!

This diversity of perspectives inspired me to delve deeper into the essence of authenticity. I aimed to identify a common core of authenticity, or at least define it for myself. This exploration inspired me to write a blog series sharing my reflections and insights.

Just Be Yourself

We are constantly changing, so what does it mean to be ourselves? Authenticity is about being true to your ever-evolving self and making peace with the complexities and contradictions inherent in human nature.
